Pilates is a body conditioning routine that helps build flexibility and strength. The emphasis in Pilates is on breathing and developing a strong core or centre, therefore it helps tone the abdominal and strengthening the back and improving coordination and balance.
Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th Century. Pilate’s exercises teach awareness of breath, alignment of the spine and aims to strengthen the deep torso muscles. His Pilates system allows for different exercises to be modified in range of difficulty from beginning to advanced.
The intensity of Pilates can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises. No muscle group is under or over trained. Pilates enhances core strength and brings increased reach, flexibility, sure-footedness and agility.
